City of Kings

Cardo Maximus

This is the road that connects the Mars Gate and the Bazée Gate. In the 18thcentury, the construction of the Place Royale led to a shift in the ancient cardo (Latin for “road”). Today, it is divided in two parts: the first is still made up of the Avenue de Laon, up to the Place Royale and the second part by the Rue de Barbâtre and the Rue Gambetta.
